Whereas I have a love of Monsters, Kenny has a penchant for bugs; well, he has a “thing” for learning random trivia about anything and drilling everyone in the home.

Bugs offer enough diversity for Kenny to drill us all for a lifetime, and since the boy regularly plays the role of “stump the chump” host, our newest game, Bug Bingo, is right up his alley.

When I went to photograph the game the “Rules and Guide To The Bugs” leaflet was missing. Figuring Kenny was the culprit, I went to find him and the guide.

Kenny: “Yes, I have it. I read about all the bugs last night. Do you know which bug has spread worldwide due to global trade?”

Me: “No.”

Kenny: “Guess.”

Me: “The mosquito?”

Kenny: “No. This is your faaaaaaaaavorite of all the bugs.”

Me: “The dragonfly.”

Kenny: “Nope. It would be your favorite bug if today were opposite day.”

Me: “You have GOT to be kidding me! Gross!!”

Kenny: “Yep.”

Me: “The COCKROACH?”

Kenny (laughing hysterically): “Yea, those dudes probably hitched a ride in everyone’s suitcases.”

As I walked away with the guide I informed him I could have gone all day without knowing that little bit of trivia.

I can still hear that punk giggling.

Bug Bingo Token Cards and Counters

The game comes with the following:

(1) Bug Bingo Rules and Guide to the Bugs leaflet
(1) Large Bug Bingo “calling” board printed with 64 bug illustrations
(1) Sturdy bag containing 64 illustrated bug tokens
(12) Bug Bingo square cards with 25 random bug illustrations
(1) Plastic bag full of green counters for the Bug Bingo cards.

The 14 page guide has the rules printed on page one, but the rest of it includes a list of all 64 bugs (and illustrations) found on the large Bug Bingo callers’ board; beginning with the African Bat Bug and ending with the Wetapunga.

Are you familiar with the Wetapunga?

Wetapunga (Deinacrida heteracantha) – “Related to crickets and grasshoppers, wetapunga are found in New Zealand, and the ‘punga’ part of the name comes from a Maori god who looked after ugly creatures. Wetas are known for their spiny hind legs used for defence.”

Honestly, I find myself itching while flipping through the guide.

Bug Bingo Token Bag with blue bug silhouettes

This game did not squelch on quality. The sturdy, muslin token bag seals with a drawstring and has brilliant blue bug silhouettes all over it.

Bug Bingo's high quality bag holds tokens.

The tokens are thick and slick to the touch. Each illustration is beautifully bright and distinct, just like on the individual bingo cards and the large callers’ board.

Selecting a Bug Bingo's player card

The game can be won when each player either fully covers their card OR for a quick round, when players mark off five bugs in a single line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal).

Kenny liked the idea of making the game more challenging by having the “caller” list a detail or description unique to the individual bug instead of giving the bug’s name.

If it isn’t obvious already, he aims to win.

The artist who illustrated all the bugs is Christine Berrie, a Glasgow-based illustrator who has studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Royal College of Art, London. This isn’t her first crack at Bingo games either; she also illustrated Bird Bingo.

Berrie’s work has been exhibited at the Pentagram Gallery, the DesignersBlock: Illustrate Festival and the AOI Images Exhibition. Her clients include The Guardian, The New York Times, Time Out and Penguin Books.

Bug Bingo Review

Bug Bingo also gained recent attention by winning the Spring 2014 Scholastic Instructor Magazine Teacher’s STEM Pick!

With the fourth annual Butterfly Education and Awareness Day coming up on June 7th, and three different butterflies listed in the game, Bug Bingo makes a fun activity to emphasize the occasion; y’know, if you MUST have an excuse to try to win a fun game.

HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO WIN ONE OF FIVE (5) BUG BINGO GAMES!!!

Knowing Laurence King Publishing is always generous with giveaways, I wrote and requested giveaway copies. As always, I received an expedient reply with an offer of 5 games! Whoop!
